AREGUÁ

Areguá is a town located 28 km (45 minutes) from Asunción. Founded in the 16th century by Franciscans, it stands atop a hill overlooking Lake Ypacaraí. It is known for its ceramics crafts and for being a large strawberry producer. At the end of the 19th century, it was chosen by writers, artists and intellectuals as their place to be.

Itaguá (20 km from Asuncion, 1 hour), is known worldwide for its peculiar art of ñandutí, a type of embroidery derived from the Spanish lace of the Canary Islands, introduced in Paraguay in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

Visit to the Jesuit Ruins, in San Ignacio de las Misiones, 225 km from Asuncion. A town founded in 1609 by the Jesuits, known as the capital of the Baroque Hispano-Guaraní. It contrasts with the adjacent Reinfeld colony of Canadian origin. From there, you can continue your travels, and instead of returning to Asuncion, continue on to Corrientes (300 km or more, if you cross the Yacyretá dam).
